On 27 September, Members of the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Development and from the subcommittee on Human Rights will meet jointly for presentations of this year's nominees for Parliament's Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought. Seven personalities and several NGOs have been nominated by MEPs and political groups for Parliament's renowned human rights prize which is awarded each year in December (for details see links below). The presentation of the nominees will take place on Thursday, 27 September, 12.00-13.00 in room József Antall (JAN) 2Q2 and will be webstreamed live. A shortlist of three nominees will be drawn up by a vote that will take place on 9 October.

Highlights - 24 September: Diaspora hearing, Burundi, Education, Oceans and Oversea Territories - Committee on Development

On Monday 24 September, 15:00-16:30, the Committee on Development will hold a public hearing on "Engaging the African diaspora to promote effective development cooperation policies", chaired by MEP Cécile Kyenge.

Following the hearing (16:30-19:00), the Committee will vote on its input to Parliament's position ahead of the Katowice Climate Change Conference (COP 24) and on an Opinion on unfair trading practices in the food supply chain. Members will then discuss a Decision on the Association of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), the sustainable use of oceans, amendments to a report on development funding for education and the controversial financing of Burundian troops through the EU's African Peace Facility.

The meeting will take place in room 1G2 in the Altiero Spinelli building (Brussels) and will be webstreamed live.

Highlights - Public debate on the future of development with Bill Gates - Committee on Development

On Wednesday, 17 October, the Committee on Development and the European Think Tank Group (ETTG) will jointly host and engage in a debate with Federica Mogherini, Bill Gates and high-level experts on 'Innovation in Development: The Future of EU international cooperation'.

Two panels will debate development cooperation priorities and Europe's role in the face of global challenges beyond 2019, when European Parliament elections and a new Commission will confirm or reshape future EU policies.

Bill Gates, Federica Mogherini, MEP's, experts from leading European development think-tanks and the audience will discuss challenges to multilateral cooperation and the EU's role in achieving sustainable development in its social, economic and environmental aspects. Panellists will be asked how the next set of EU instruments, within the new Multiannual Financial Framework, will need to innovate in order to support the EU as a leading and successful actor in sustainable development and global cooperation ˗ tackling poverty, inequality, fragility, conflict, climate change and challenges resulting from migration.

The meeting will take place in room József Antall (JAN) 2Q2, 14.30-17.30 and will be webstreamed live. Registration closes on 9 October at the latest.

The first meeting of the Committee on Development after the summer recess took place Wednesday, 29 August and Thursday morning, 30 August. The Committee voted on amendments for development and humanitarian budget lines for the 2019 EU budget. Issues for discussion included the negotiating mandate for a new partnership agreement with countries of Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, development cooperation with Iran, the new Multi-annual Financial Framework and additional funding for the EU Africa Trust Fund. Members were also briefed on and discussed the humanitarian crises in Gaza and Venezuela. The video recording of the meeting is available below.

The next meeting will take place on Monday, 24 September (15:00-18:30), and will include a hearing on the role of the African diaspora in promoting effective development cooperation.
