Eurafrique: new paradigms, but old ideas, for France in the Sahel

21. November 2018 - 10:38

The Sahel has become a nest of instability where terrorism, drug trafficking, smuggling, corruption and many other illnesses have taken root. Consequently, European actors are heavily investing in the region, with France in the lead. Yet, these threats on their own do not explain France’s eagerness to invest in the Sahel. For France, it is also a way to strengthen its (military) position in the region, which can be 'understood by looking back at France’s colonial era ‘Eurafrique’ project.

The big migration debate: time to cut the link with development

2. November 2018 - 13:11

In the big ‘migration debate’ strong assumptions have been made about the link between migration and development. Often, development is regarded as a tool to reduce migration and, vice versa, migration as a tool to affect development. This, however, is not necessarily true, resulting in unnecessary confusion and even worse – bad policies for the management of migration. It is time to take a critical look at the assumed migration-development link and stop treating development cooperation as a tool to stem migration.

Informal sector must be on the menu for inclusive growth

23. Oktober 2018 - 16:28

An enabled, well-supported and dynamic informal sector can be a potent instrument for generating more inclusive growth. New results from South African research highlights the important role of informal enterprises in providing paid employment and reducing poverty. But in order to strengthen this role substantially and sustainably, effective and enabling policies are required, including ‘smart’ formalization. Expanding the evidence base on knowledge brokering in international development

22. Oktober 2018 - 12:46

At home and abroad, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to bring together governments, civil society organizations, the private sector and research organizations. Since 2012, it  has been investing in multi-stakeholder knowledge platforms for global development, which have yielded positive results, according to The Gold Standard learning review, undertaken in 2016. However, the scientific evidence base of these platforms and other knowledge brokering initiatives still needs to be strengthened. To identify ways in which the use of evidence in policy and practice can be enhanced, the Science for Using Research (SURe) programme initiated three research projects. The preliminary results of these projects are presented here.

15. Oktober 2018 - 16:39

Current policy making in international development lacks the right balance between economic, environmental and social benefits. In order to make policies sustainable, such a balance should be sought more forcefully. This entails engaging the private sector with new and innovative approaches, given its key position in the global development discourse.

Obsessed with impact – towards a systems approach for social change

4. Oktober 2018 - 17:03

Many forms of resistance do not take place in squares. In some cases, people enact the social change they want to see through practical interventions – for instance, by initiating community projects or a social enterprise. While many of these initiatives are laudable, the obsession with measuring their direct impact is distracting us from understanding, and changing, the bigger picture: the systems in which they are embedded.

Work beyond the pay cheque: boosting employees’ spirits for societal gain

26. September 2018 - 13:16

The obsession with capital accumulation and the resulting idolatry of money have created an impersonal economy and competitive workplace that aims at getting the most out of people, while lacking a truly humanistic purpose. However, past crises have nudged a mindset shift towards an emphasis on compassion with respect to organizational purpose. As a result, organizational practices are expanding to encompass concerns about spirituality and purposeful jobs that create ‘the greater good’. Nowadays, multiple stakeholders demand that organizations serve as communities that produce positive outcomes for the individual, the community, and society. It is time to rethink work practices and to let the concepts of ‘work’ and ‘labour’ contribute to making societies more sustainable and inclusive, by elevating humanity through spiritually-driven individuals and organizations.

18. September 2018 - 15:06

Countless social movements are currently simmering below the radar. They are locally rooted and globally connected in translocal networks, creating new practices and ideas for tackling economic, ecological and social challenges. However, they merely flicker in the shadows if they fail to address existing power structures. In this blog, I provide some ways to harvest the full potential of translocal social movements to challenge existing economic and political systems.
